Friends of African Village Libraries:
Friends of African Village Libraries (FAVL) is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization that provides assistance for rural village libraries in sub-Saharan Africa. FAVL’s goal is to assist the rural poor of Africa by helping create village libraries. FAVL does this by refurbishing community-donated buildings, purchasing books by local authors and in local languages, sending donated and collected books, providing for librarian salaries, extending financial support to existing village libraries in Africa, and sponsoring librarian training and library outreach and advocacy.
The Niankorodougou library will be a FAVL supported library (as opposed to a library directly managed by FAVL). What does being FAVL supported library mean? FAVL plays a positive role for FAVL supported libraries in being able to offer occasional support, and also in facilitating occasional verification of library quality. FAVL may act as a broker or partner for donors that wish to support village libraries but lack the expertise or local staff to implement a library support program. FAVL may initiate and invite participation in programs that disburse grants or provide training (e.g. workshops).
